The name Judah (Heb: Yahudah = "Praise") was first given to the fourth son of Jacob and Leah. Leah was grateful to have borne four sons for the man who she felt "hated" her. As a founding father of the nation of "Israel" (see Tribe of Judah), his name would be honored as fathers would name their sons by this name. None are recorded until the New Testament. There the name is transliterated as Judas, or Jude.
